Why Chinese Matcha?
Cafes often ask us why we develop premium matcha from China instead of Japan. We do this because it allows us to deliver a great cafe product at a lower cost for cafes:
Omorie Matcha's popular 1kg organic matcha bag sells for $150.
Comparable matcha from Japan would sell for nearly $300 in the current market
Availability & Price
China has far greater matcha supply than Japan through the scale of its farms, the number of industry professionals, and its significantly more advanced harvesting and processing methods compared to those in Japan. This enables greater supply, reducing cost and price pressures.
To achieve a similar quality matcha to Japan, the price would be around double.
For a given price, the color difference typically looks like A (China) vs B (Japan).
Growing Conditions
Zhejiang province’s growing conditions, along with its advanced growing and processing techniques, produce great matcha.
The tea trees that grow the leaves for matcha are a combination of Japanese and Chinese originating species.
Quality
Supply availability and growing conditions culminate in a brilliant cafe matcha product.
Matcha quality is defined by its color and taste profile. The quickest way to see quality is through how vibrantly green your matcha is. The classic high quality matcha look is a rich, dark green, ‘Instagram worthy’ color.
